‘GUT HEALTH’ WHAT IT IS AND WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

The gut is the digestive system. It is often referred to as 'the second brain' because of the crucial role it plays in maintaining overall health and well-being.

"People with good gut health have more energy to go through the day. It may be a small thing, but if you're feeling well because of your good gut health, you will do well overall" - Dr Khan.

The gut is the digestive system. It is often referred to as 'the second brain' because of the crucial role it plays in maintaining overall health and well-being. About 200 different species of bacteria, viruses and fungu reside in the gut and this is known as the gut microbiome. These microorganisms play different functions ranging from digestion to nutrient absorption to immune function and mental health. The gut microbiome has both good and bad microorganisms. However, a healthy gut has more good microorganisms than the bad ones. It is therefore, important to maintain a healthy gut for the following reasons:

1. Aids digestion and nutrient absorption: The microbes in the gut help to break down and absorb nutrients from the food we eat. A healthy gut with balanced microbiome ensures proper food digestion and optimal nutrient absorption, thereby, supporting overall nutritional intake.

2. Strong immune system: About 70% of the immune system lives in the gut. A healthy gut contributes to a well-functioning immune system, thereby, strengthening the immune system and giving protection against harmful pathogens and diseases.

3. Improved mental health and mood: There is a bidirectional relationship between the gut and the brain. This is known as the gut-brain axis. An imbalance in the gut microbiome has been linked with various mental health issues like anxiety and depression. Maintaining a healthy gut through diet and lifestyle improves the mental health and mood.

4. Weight management: The gut microbiome plays a key role in metabolism and fat storage. Unhealthy gut with imbalanced microbiome can be linked to obesity and metabolic disorders such as diabetes mellitus.

5. Prevention of chronic inflammatory diseases: Many diseases are caused by chronic inflammation. They include hypertension, stroke, certain types of cancers, autoimmune diseases etc. A healthy gut contributes to a healthy balance of inflammatory and anti-inflammatory responses within the body thereby preventing the occurrence of chronic inflammatory diseases.

Maintaining a good gut health is non-negotiable as it is essential to our overall physical and mental well-being. Prioritize your gut health today!!
