HEMORRHOIDS: HOW TO PREVENT IT AND REDUCE ITS OCCURRENCE.

Hemorrhoids, also known as pile, is a condition in which the veins of the rectum and anus are inflammed and swollen

Samir's wife noticed that Samir stayed longer in the toilet than usual. She went to the toilet and on getting to the toilet's door, she heard a soft groan which she guessed to be her husband's. She knocked lightly and waited for his response. There was a soft mumble and he asked her to come in. She rushed inside and met him sitting on the toilet seat with beads of sweat on his forehead. He was panting.

'Darling, what's wrong with you? You have been in the toilet for a while and you don't look alright. Do you have constipation?' She asked leaning on the sink in the spacious toilet.

'Constipation would have been better, my dear. After defecating, I washed my butt only to feel a round swelling between my bumbum. I have been trying to push it back but to no avail. I can even notice trickles of blood on it when I touched it. I am also feeling this mild pain around that area and itchiness as well'

'Are you serious?' She rushed over to him and knelt down trying to inspect the affected area. 'We need to go to the hospital. I will go get the car keys, babe'. She stopped on her way out and turned to him 'You should clean up and let us go to the hospital'

'How am I supposed to go to the hospital with this thing hanging between my butt?!' He cried out.

'That is true. I didn't think of that. Maybe you should wrap tissue paper around it gently and put on your underwear and wear a loose trouser. You just have to endure so we can get to the hospital to find a solution to it'.

'Okay. I will be right behind you'.

Hemorrhoids, also known as pile, is a condition in which the veins of the rectum and anus are inflammed and swollen. This causes discomfort and anal bleeding. It could be internal or external hemorrhoids. Internal hemorrhoids develop inside the rectum while external hemorrhoids develop under the skin around the anus. It is usually caused by straining during defecation, pregnancy, obesity, eating low-fiber diet, regularly lifting heavy items, having anal intercourse, chronic diarrhea or constipation and sitting for long periods especially on the toilet. It is characterized by bright red blood after defecating, itching in the anus, pain in the anus, anal swelling, lump around the anus and painful bowel movements.

Hemorrhoids, although uncomfortable and discomfiting, can be prevented with the appropriate dietary and lifestyle modifications.

1. Eat high-fiber foods: Food rich in fiber like vegetables, fruits and whole grains prevent and reduce the occurrence of hemorrhoids by softening the stools, thereby avoiding straining that cause hemorrhoids. Introduce fiber-rich food into your diet, albeit, slowly to avoid problem with gas.

2. Take plenty of fluid: Fluids like water, fruit juice aid bowel movement thereby softening stools and preventing occurrence of hemorrhoids. Take at least 6-8L of water daily to keep your stools soft as this will help to avoid straining during bowel movement that leads to hemorrhoids.

3. Engage in active physical exercise: Exercise helps to keep you active and prevent constipation as well as reducing the pressure on the rectal veins. This also helps to lose weight that may be linked to hemorrhoids.

4. Avoid straining while defecating: Straining while stooling puts pressure on the veins leading to hemorrhoids. Therefore, it is necessary to avoid straining while stooling. If you are constipated, take water and take fibrous foods to aid free passage of stools rather than straining. If bowel movement has not occurred after two minutes, get up and try again.

5. Avoid prolonged sitting: Prolonged sitting puts pressure on the veins in the rectum and anus thereby predisposing an individual to hemorrhoids. Avoid prolonged sitting to prevent occurrence of hemorrhoids.

6. Perform warm sitz bath: Sit in a tub of warm water filled with just enough warm water to cover the legs. This helps to ease swelling and irritation caused by the hemorrhoids. Salt can also be added to the water to relieve the inflammation.

7. Apply ice packs to the inflammed area: Ice or cold packs can be applied to the area to aid in numbing the pain and temporarily reduce the pain. Wrap the ice in a small towel before applying it to the affected area to prevent damages to the area. Leave the ice packs for fifteen minutes and repeat the process hourly.

With the appropriate lifestyle and dietary modification, not only can you reduce the occurrence of hemorrhoids, you can also prevent it from
