PREVENTING GASTROENTERITIS THROUGH LIFESTYLE AND DIET

Over the last few weeks, most members of Olorunsogo community came down with diarrhea, vomiting, stomachache, and nausea. The general hospital in the community was filled with people with these symptoms. Many of them were diagnosed with gastroenteritis by the doctor. The doctor called for a meeting with the community leaders to address the root cause of the issue.

'Good afternoon, everyone. Thank you for coming to this meeting' The doctor adjusted his glasses 'As we all know, many members of this community have presented with symptoms of gastroenteritis in the last couple of weeks and it is worrisome' The people nodded their heads in approval 'That is why I have called for this meeting so we can find a lasting solution to it' He ended and sat down 

An elderly man, popularly called baale, stood up 'Thank you so much, doctor. It has been of great concern to us as well too. We would appreciate your suggestions on how to go about it'

'Alright. We can organize an outreach where we will invite someone who is enlightened on the subject matter to educate the populace on how to prevent this disease that is fast becoming a menace in our community'

They all agreed by nodding their heads.

The doctor continued 'There is a seasoned and well-trained health and lifestyle coach I know who can handle the job well. Her name is healthyish. We can invite her'

'All right, that will be good. You can make the arrangement and get back to us, so, we can fix a date and plan for the outreach. Thank you very much, doctor'

Gastroenteritis is also known as stomach flu. It is the inflammation and irritation of the digestive tract. It is usually caused by viral and bacterial infections and is characterized by nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fever and stomach ache. It is a common inflammatory disease. However, with the appropriate lifestyle and dietary modifications, it can be prevented. Here are strategies for preventing gastroenteritis:

1. Practice Good Hygiene: Good hygiene is crucial in preventing gastroenteritis, especially when it is causedby infectious agents. Practice good hygiene by washing your hands regularly with soap and warm water, maintaining clean surfaces by disinfecting kitchen surfaces, bathroom surfaces, and frequently touched items like doorknobs and light switches.

2. Safe Food and Water Consumption: Contaminated food and water are common sources of gastroenteritis. Ensure safe food and water consumption by drinking safe water and eating safe foods

3. Store Food Properly: Refrigerate perishable foods promptly and avoid consuming food that has been left out for too long.

4. Eat a Balanced Diet: Consume a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats to ensure you get adequate nutrients.

5. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep your body functioning optimally and flush off toxins from your body system. 

6. Engage in Regular Exercise: Physical activity can boost your immune system and overall health, thereby preventing gastroenteritis.

7. Get Adequate Sleep: Ensure you get 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night to help your body repair and strengthen its defenses.

8. Be Cautious with Travel: When traveling to areas with poor sanitation, avoid tap water, raw foods, and foods sold by street vendors. Use bottled water for drinking and brushing teeth.

Preventing gastroenteritis involves a combination of good hygiene, safe food and water consumption, a strong immune system, and avoiding risky behaviors. By incorporating these lifestyle and dietary changes into your daily routine, you can significantly reduce your risk of developing gastroenteritis and maintain better overall health.
