TIPS FOR STAYING HEALTHY DURING HEAT PERIOD

Sade had just had her bath for the second time in two hours. She came out from the bathroom wearing a very light nightwear, yet the heat was uncontrollable. She sighed as she sat beside her husband in their sitting room. NEPA had just taken light and the exorbitant price of petrol did not give them the luxury of switching on the generator. Their windows were wide open yet, it seemed as if the air had taken a break from blowing. She lamented about the heat as she picked the hand fan on the table to blow air unto herself. She watched her husband as he concentrated on his phone oblivious of the heat.

'Babe, are you not feeling hot?' she asked.

He lifted his face off his phone and raised his eyebrows ' Of course, I am. Who's not affected by this heat?' He replied.

' But you seem unbothered by it. You're even so focused on your phone right now'

'Well, there's nothing we can do about it. The only thing we can do is just to stay healthy until this heat wave is over' He turned his body to face her and continued ' Babes, I was just reading this article on healthyish blog about how to stay healthy during this heat period. Listen, let me read it for you'

'Alright. I'm all ears'

It is not news that the heat during this period is alarming. Some people even joke that maybe the last person to enter hellfire forgot to close the door. However, it is important to take extra care of our bodies in order to stay healthy and safe in the heat. High temperatures can lead to dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke if proper precautions are not taken. Here are some tips for staying healthy during the heat period:

1. Stay hydrated: During hot weather, it is important to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day. Avoid sugary drinks and alcohol, as they can actually dehydrate you.

2. Dress appropriately: Wear loose, light-colored clothing to help keep your body cool. Avoid dark colors that absorb heat and tight clothing that can restrict airflow.

3. Stay indoors during peak heat: Try to stay indoors during the hottest part of the day, typically from 10am to 4pm. If you need to be outside, try to find shade or wear a hat to protect yourself from the sun.

4. Use sunscreen: Protect your skin from harmful UV rays by wearing sunscreen with a high SPF. Reapply every two hours, especially if you are sweating or swimming.

5. Take breaks: If you are engaging in physical activity outdoors, make sure to take breaks and rest in a cool, shaded area. Listen to your body and stop if you start to feel dizzy, nauseous, or fatigued.

6. Eat light meals: Heavy, greasy foods can increase your body temperature and make you feel sluggish. Opt for light, refreshing meals such as salads, fruits, and vegetables.

7. Use fans or air conditioning: Keep your living space cool by using fans or air conditioning. If you do not have air conditioning, consider going to a public place that does, such as a library or shopping mall.

By following these tips, you can stay healthy and safe during the heat period. Remember to listen to your body and take breaks when needed. Stay cool and hydrated, and enjoy the hot weather while taking care of your
